Martin Luther King Jr Day

Ahh.. another relaxing government sanctioned holiday. Let us not forget why we have this day.

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of a great man who fought for rights for African Americans and in turn spiraled into rights for everyone.

If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here today. Interracial marriages were illegal until 1967. Can you believe that two people in love were not allowed to marry based on race? That same issue parallels a current issue today but that's for another day.

Sometimes I forget that I am multi-racial. This is a good thing; it means I am treated (on the whole) like any other person.

I am also thankful that I had no holds on who I wanted to marry. How heartbreaking would it be to fall in love with someone and not be able to marry them?

On top of securing rights for people of various races, MLK also paved the road for women's rights. I'm very thankful that I can legally work, drive a car and vote. I generally make fun of feminists but I do appreciate being an "equal" among men.

Why are you thankful for MLK Jr Day?
